    In memory of
    Michel Raynaud (1938-2018)
    March 10, 2018

Raynaud, a French mathematician whose work had a profound influence on algebraic geometry, died March 10 at the age of 79. Among his notable results were a proof of the Manin-Mumford conjecture and of the Abhyankar conjecture for the affine line. Raynaud was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1970. He was a member of the French Academy of Sciences, received its Ampère Prize in 1987, and received the 1995 Cole Prize in Algebra with David Harbater for their work proving the Abhyankar conjecture. Raynaud received his PhD from University of Paris XI in 1968 under the direction of Alexander Grothendieck. His wife, Michèle, is a mathematician as well, and also earned her PhD under Grothendieck's direction. See more about Michel Raynaud's work on his Wikipedia page.
